The Talking Newspapers Reader is one of the ever-growing number of KeySpeak modules.
KeySpeak is Portset's Speech Enablement that provides a voice on a Personal Computer.
Specially developed in conjunction with the Talking Newspapers Association (TNAUK), the KeySpeak Reader for Talking Newspapers gives you listening access to every newspaper and magazine edition on the weekly CD-ROM issued by the Talking Newspapers Association.
The KeySpeak Reader for Talking Newspapers allows you to read newspapers and magazines just as a sighted person would do. Select your journal from over one hundred newspapers and magazines on the CD-ROM; then hear the article headlines read to you. Press a key and listen to the article read in its entirety. There is no editing and no censorship.
How is this? Publications on the TNAUK CD-ROM are in the same electronic text format as the publisher uses, but there are neither advertisements nor photographs. Using this electronic text, the KeySpeak Reader lists all the journals for you, so that you can select the one you want to read. Then, all the articles in your selection are indexed. One press of the enter key and the article you selected from the index is being read to you.
Reading finished?
Then go back to the index and select another article. Or maybe you want to go back to the journals listing for a different magazine.
Published every week, the TNAUK CD-ROM holds editions of major newspapers from the previous seven days. There is a wide range of magazines, weeklies and monthlies, to satisfy general and specialised interests. This means that from each week's CD-ROM, you will be able to choose your reading from as many as seventy daily newspapers, twelve Sunday newspapers and twenty-five different weekly and monthly magazines.
Got a favourite magazine that is not currently published through TNAUK? They may add it if requested, or make it available to you on a diskette that the KeySpeak Talking Newspapers Reader will be able to read for you.
Talking Newspapers supply thousands of recorded cassette tapes every week to blind people. Their wonderful service has grown over twenty years and now takes advantage of the computer age. The limitations of recorded tape meant that there was just not enough room on a journal cassette for every article. Nor indeed was it possible to record longer articles in full. However, by providing publications in their electronic text format, Talking Newspapers give you almost everything! Everything - so you decide what articles to listen to, and every article can be read to you in its full length just as the author and magazine publisher intended.
Using the KeySpeak Talking Newspapers Reader, you will easily locate articles in any journal for reading. You can also set the Reader to read the whole journal to you. While reading the article, you can navigate backwards and forwards for better understanding. The KeySpeak Reader uses Portset's high quality British English voices for both article reading and for the spoken system messages that guide you through the selection process.
The TNAUK Reader is just like having a personal reader. It's with you and at your command all day and every day.
